Teaching Adolescents English.
My third practicum period, secondary, started on October 1st when Prof. Paola Hurban allowed me to work with their Ss at the same school in which I did the other two practicum experiences: Instituto Marcelo Spínola in Caleta Olivia.
This group is at an Intermediate linguistic level so I figured out that I would face a double challenge in the two months that follow. On the one hand, they are teenagers, an age-group I have never felt comfortable with. Don't ask me why, it has been always the same since my teenage years. I have read a paper recently, in which the author explains how the teacher's learning history influences his/her teaching performance. I share this position: Adolescence hasn't been an easy stage for me to deal with. Neither as a teenager myself nor as a teacher. Nonetheless, I was perfectly aware that I should leave all my fears behind and get down to the work...with the biggest smile ever, as Prof. Paola says.
Unlike the other groups I taught, there are Ss from years 3 to 5 in Secondary education, therefore they are not classmates outside this classroom. Another aspect to bear in mind is that Ss meet once a week for 120 minutes, so the teacher has to compress everything to cover a whole unit from the coursebook in two weeks, that is to say, two lesson. Scary, right?
Speaking about the coursebook, this is the one they follow:

So, this is what I've done so far. By the time I write this entry, I have delivered three of four lessons.
Moure secondary intermediate_lesson_plan3 - checked from Regina Moure
Here's the fourth plan used as a guideline for my last class with this group of students.
Materials and resources.
In order to avoid making the coursebook the only source of input and activities for students, I complemented it by creating my own material. It mainly consisted of posters, flashcards and worksheets.
1st lesson: Introducing First conditional
2nd lesson: Practising 1st conditional in a different context. In this case, these flashcards belong to the pre-listening stage to a Bruno Mars' song. Then, students watched the following video so as to check their predictions about the topic of the song, working on their listening skills at the time they integrated recently learnt vocabulary and structure:
There was an instance of guided- practice at the beginning of our 3rd class together. Students would have to help me solve the following situations. They would make offers by using the modal WILL.
Modal WILL was also employed here to make 1st Conditional sentences.
The last class drew around the topic of Camping experiences (Present perfect for telling about recent experiences). Students solved this crossword in pairs before sharing their answers in the big group.
The following is the final result.
